First up, meet Anthony & Kriscinda.

They were so much fun to hang out with, and are absolutely bonkers about each other. We got a few shots in their backyard (“Yeah, we have photo shoots in our backyard like… ALL the time.”) I’ve had several couples ask to take some photos with their dog, but this is the first that wanted some with their cat. As you can see, she’s totally psyched to be involved.

I have serious jacket envy.

We moved on to a local cemetery where they like to walk after that, and got some great sun flare.

I mentioned that this was pretty close to Chatham, where I’d gone to grad school, and found out that Kriscinda had graduated from there as well. Small world, eh?

So why would you want to volunteer your time for WMC Fest? Well…

It’s Fun.
If you’re worried that volunteering means you’ll miss all the good stuff, don’t be. Shifts are short, so you’re not “stuck” in any one space for the whole day. Last year I opted to cover the speakers all weekend, and got to hear some AMAZING presentations while I worked.

Meet Cool People.
This isn’t exactly exclusive to volunteering, since you’ll meet great people anyway. But I got to hang out behind the scenes a lot as a volunteer, and spend some time with the folks that make the festival happen.

It’s Good for Your Portfolio.
Believe me, I’m the LAST person on the planet to pull a “it’s good exposure” on you. What I will say is that you’re guaranteed to have opportunities to shoot some really cool stuff. Last year I got to shoot things like Aaron Draplin planting the Puerto Rican flag onstage, a rainbow parade, live bands, and a breakdance battle.

Support WMC Fest.
WMC Fest is a unique festival and community event, and it’s something that I’m proud to be a part of. I saw first hand last year how much volunteers are needed to keep everything running smoothly. This year, I’m seeing first hand how all of the money going to the festival is getting put back into it, and making it better.

Get in Free.
While this is probably the most reasonably priced festival I know of, free stuff is still pretty great. Put in four hours taking photos or shooting video for the event, and you can hang out the rest of that day for free (plus, you get a t-shirt. And since it’s a design festival, you know it’ll be an awesome t-shirt.)

No, these aren’t from last night’s show at Stage AE. There was a little mix up with the press pass, and sadly I missed Title Fight’s set. A Day To Remember’s and Rise Against’s photos will be up soonish. For now, here’s a few shots from the AP Tour last November, at the Altar Bar.

I was pretty focused on getting this shot, which means I was totally NOT focused on the 8 or so people that decided to crowd surf up to the front all at once. Since they didn’t have a barrier for this show (or actually, anything I’ve shot at Altar), I was in the pit with everyone else, and took a boot to the face. But hey, I got the shot.

They put on a great set, so I’m pretty bummed that I missed them this time around.

Our whole drive out looks approximately like this:

Our first destination was the Grog Shop, to see Protest the Hero (which is the second time we’ve driven to Cleveland to see them), along with The Safety Fire, Jeff Loomis, and Periphery. Protest’s show was entertaining as usual, they’re great musicians but are also just really funny dudes. Here’s me and John, looking excited about the totally bomb ass parking spot we found.

After the show, we pretty much just scrambled to find somewhere that was still open for food, and crashed at the hotel. We had all sorts of plans for the next day, but since we were pretty much winging it the entire weekend, ended up doing almost none of them. We did manage to make the whole thing an exercise in getting as much free shit as possible over the course of a weekend, and kicked that off with breakfast at Bob Evans (gift card #1). We found out that since it was induction day, admission to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame was free (booyah!). We’d planned on hanging out there for a bit, and then moving on to some other attractions, but ended up spending something like 5 hours looking around in there.

This band won the corporate rock contest, and it made up entirely of members of some accounting firm.

I literally squealed “Oh my God, horsies!” at this. I’m not proud of myself, guys.

We had planned to hit up the art museum after this, but our plan didn’t include actually looking up their hours, and they close at the same time as the Rock Hall. We instead waited for something like an hour to get into Outback (gift card #2), and realized over dinner that we were both crazy tired. Sadly, we completely punked out on going to the WMC Fest fundraiser show at the Happy Dog that evening, on account of general oldness. We stopped off at Starbucks (gift card #3) on the way out of Ohio to get properly caffeinated for the trip home.

Speaking of WMC Fest, it’s my next scheduled stop in Cleveland. If you’re into music, design, and/or art, you should definitely look into picking up tickets.

The Fine PrintSessions are 30 minutes, and you’ll receive 20 high-res edited images, which you can use wherever you like. It’s sort of like the mini sessions we’d offered earlier in the year, except that $99 of your $99 goes straight to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.

I never saw Brownsville in anything that could have been described as a “heyday,” but I do remember it being busier than it is now, and have seen a number of businesses close. As a kid, we got all of our prescriptions at the Thrift Drug in town, and my husband said all of his doctor appointments were in the Union Station building (for whatever reason, we went to Centerville Clinic). My mother used to get her sewing machine repaired there, by a guy that fixed sewing machines and refrigerators (I’m not sure where the overlap in skill is on that one). He passed away, and the shop closed. I used to waitress at the diner they reference in the article, and that’s one of the few places that is still open. I understand where some of the sentiment comes from, but hearing people romanticize the town is just a little weird to me.

I made a comment that if the Huffington Post wanted photos of Brownsville, that I could certainly hook them up. I thought instead, I’d share them here. It’s a random assortment of shots that I’ve taken in or of Brownsville since we moved back here in ’08, and I guess it’s my perspective on the place. I’m certainly better at photographing places than I am at writing about them.

So, any other locals want to weigh in? Out-of-towners planning to visit?

After a really lovely ceremony, they headed over to the Hyeholde for the reception (in their very sweet ride).

As I’ve mentioned before, there’s just no bad place to take photos on the grounds.

The speeches were great. I don’t often see grooms giving speeches about their new brides, but more of you should.
